ways towards something at The Exchange
Last month members of the collective ways towards something joined forces with Radio Stall and artists Carla Busuttil and Cathy Wade to produce a collaborative improvised performance as part of The Exchange X Barber LATES: Art, science and the natural world.
The event centred on René Magritte’s painting The Flavour of Tears (1948) a work held in The Barber Institute of Fine Arts collection, that challenges our perceptions of nature and the world around us. The performance was created through in-depth exploration of the painting’s Surrealist iconography and focus on ecology and transformation. In preparation for the performance field recordings, sounds, videos and images were developed and shared individually and collectively, merging sonics and visuals into a collective response.
Ways towards something’s collective development has been supported by Vivid Projects, where they have gathered to explore, experiment and play on a monthly basis over the past 12 months as part of Vivid Lab. The group works with open-source software and low-cost tools and instruments, with a focus on encouraging women, trans, non-binary and gender expansive people to engage with new sound making processes.
