Psychic Antisthesia
Experimental Film Workshop
Led by Midlands based artists Sarah Walden, John Bradburn and Ollie MacDonald-Brown.
An experiential one-day collaborative workshop celebrating occultism, cut-ups, mash-ups, derailing mass media control, and psychic liberation. Exploring the range of film and image making practices which inform the NOISE + NOSTALGIA exhibition, participants looked at experimental film and image making through collaboration, discussion and hands on experimentation with technical, conceptual and aesthetic approaches. Everyone involved was invited to challenge their perceptions of film making, using the post-punk DIY attitude as a starting point.
Schedule
- 10:00 – 13:30: a morning session of introduction and [dis]orientation, including an opportunity for close analysis of selected films from the NOISE + NOSTALGIA exhibition, followed by space to explore these ideas through shooting and processing 16mm B&W celluloid.
- 14:30 – 17:00: an afternoon laboratory session in which participants will, in groups, create a post-punk artistic response to the NOISE + NOSTALGIA exhibition and the context around it.
- 17:00 – 18:00: a final live AV performance of works created, to a live audience.
A variety of equipment was provided; participants could bring additional equipment (must have been manufactured pre-1997 and/or must not cost more than £5 to buy today). Participants were welcome to bring existing footage (VHS, 8 or 16mm only) and/or audio taped material (on cassette or microcassette).
The Laboratory and Screening/Performance sessions were Periscoped.
