Observe Protocol

7 February 2025 – 31 July 2025

Thursdays 12-5pm

Observe Protocol is a work in development by Vivid Lab resident Oscar Cass-Darweish hosted onsite at Vivid Projects. The work represents the invisible interactions that persistently take place between our digital devices in real time within our building at Allison St. Once you enter the space your devices will be interacting with and changing the output of the artwork.

Each node visible on-screen, in this work, represents a nearby digital device, ordered by time of its first detected activity. Visualised as a series of coloured squares visible on-screen that represent nearby digital devices. Capturing the calls and responses that are made multiple times a second from our devices as local routers, phones and laptops look for new available networks. Variations in colour and appearance reflect how recently each device has been active and how strong its signal currently is. There are prompts onsite which will further direct you to engage with the themes of the work. You can access these prompts and read more about the project here. You can also follow this link to access a QR Code to be a remote viewer of the live updates and interactions taking place on-site.

This work does not persistently store any data. Any data presented without requiring your permission is obtained via typical behaviour of consumer Wi-Fi devices and protocols. Any sensor or service you give permission to, via your web browser while using QR Code link above, may send additional data from your device that will temporarily affect the work. This will disappear when the browser session resets automatically every 24 hours, or the maximum number (200) of devices have joined since your device joined.
