Writing as Making/Shifting.
Linda Stupart
13 July 2019, 12:00 - 17:00
In Rauschenberg’s Canyon (1959) there is a dead bald eagle murdered by one of the last dead members of the first American Volunteer cavalry/a man who rode on the tops of horses killing men dead with long cockguns/ who rode on the top horses to kill eagles so there were none left to sully the image of AMERICA AND FREEDOM AND THAT PICTURE OF AN EAGLE ON YOUR SHIRT WHERE YOU WIPED THE BLOOD OF ITS REFERENT.

For this workshop, Linda will explore what text can articulate through making and vocalising. How words can become actions and deeds, that can live in the world. The workshop offers participants an opportunity to explore their own relationship with words, how it can be expanded and further articulated as practice.
Linda Stupart is an artist, writer, and educator from Cape Town, South Africa. They are interested in the possibilities for writing and making discrete grounded encounters with different kinds of bodies (of knowledge, objects, affect as well as corporeal bodies) as a way to think through less alienated ways of living and thinking together. This comes out of encounters with feminist art, postcolonial, ecological, queer, and affect theory as well as embodied and object-based critical institutional encounters.
Stupart is currently working on a monograph exploring queer reading practices, to be published by MA BIBLIOTHÈQUE in 2019. Their spells against (and for) the artworld (2016) are currently touring as part of Still I Rise: Feminisms, Gender, Resistance at Nottingham Contemporary and De La Warr Pavilion in 2018/2019. Their current practice-based research project, After the Ice, the Deluge, was exhibited at IMT Gallery in 2019, and they have recently participated in the 2019 Arctic Circle residency for artists and scientists working on climate change. Previously, Stupart has taught at the University of Cape Town, Goldsmiths, Camberwell Arts College, London College of Communication, Oxford, and University of Reading. They have worked as workshop artist in education teams at South London Gallery, Battersea Arts Centre and Tate Galleries. Stupart recently completed an in-schools resource with Tate Schools and Teachers to support teachers in using art to talk about gender.
